What we believe

As a church we hold to the 1677/89 (Second London) Baptist Confession of Faith.

We believe that the Bible is the Word of God. We go to the Bible to find out what God teaches we should believe, and how we should live. In very brief summary, the Word of God teaches that:

  • The triune God – one God in three persons, Father, Son and Spirit – is our Creator;
  • God is sovereign over all his creation;
  • The human race fell into sin;
  • Salvation from sin is through Jesus Christ alone;
  • Jesus Christ is the Son of God, born of a virgin, who lived a sinless life, and then died on a cross to atone for our sins, and rose again on the third day;
  • Jesus Christ ascended into heaven, and reigns there now, and will come a second time to judge the world and establish his eternal kingdom;
  • Salvation is by the grace of God alone, on the basis of Christ’s sacrifice for sin;
  • The only answer to the many problems and evils of society is the gospel of Jesus Christ, which is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes;
  • God commands all people to repent of their sins and believe the gospel;
  • The Holy Spirit must give us grace to believe, and enable us to live a life worthy of the gospel of Jesus;
  • The church is composed of repenting and believing sinners who confess Jesus as Lord and Saviour, are baptised, and continue to live a life of obedience to and joy in Christ, according to the Bible;
  • Christians have a responsibility to conduct themselves in a manner appropriate to the gospel we confess;
  • The church must continue to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ to all people.

This is a very brief outline of some of the basic truths to which we hold. To see our Confession of Faith, which contains “the things most surely believed among us,” please follow the links in the sidebar.
